There are tons of resources out there but you need to know where to look. A good place to start looking is in the information about where your ancestors are from. There is a great book called "The Handybook for Geneologists" (Published by Everton Publishers, 2006, ISBN: 1-890895-05-9) where you can look up information about any county in any state and when it was formed and things like that. It is a great place to start if you have access to a copy of it.
You can also look up the research outline for a county or state which will tell you where you can get vital records(like a birth certificates or a marraige liscence) at wiki.familysearch.org.
